Chapter 5: The Voices in My Head
Whose voice are you listening to?
Your answer dictates the direction of your life.
Funny as it sounds, we ALL hear voices in our heads, and which voice we choose to listen to makes ALL the difference.
I recently saw this quote:
“AN HONEST ENEMY IS BETTER THAN A LYING FRIEND.” (Monria Titans, Facebook, first posted Jan. 10, 2014)
There is no such thing as a lying “friend.” That’s an oxymoron.
But lying does have a source.
Just as John Adams is the Father of the Constitution, as George Washington is the Father of this great United States - lying, too, has a father.
Satan is the Father of Lies.
John 8:44 - Here’s a paraphrase: “Satan is a liar. In fact, one could say that lying is his native language, his MO - modus operandi. He is the father of lies.”
You see, Satan IS your lying “friend.”
So, DO YOU ACTUALLY KNOW whose voice you are listening to?
Satan’s voice has identifiable characteristics.
POINT 1: SATAN IS AN ACCUSER (Revelation 12:10b)
Satan criticizes, complains, confronts, and shifts blame. It’s always someone else’s bad attitude, someone else’s wrong doings, someone else’s malevolent intentions, someone else’s fault!
Under Satan’s influence, we attribute our own hostilities toward others. We become overly defensive, unforgiving and accusing of others.
Satan only sees good in those who are self-serving.
Rebecca’s daddy would say: “Suspicion of others is often aroused by the knowledge of oneself.”
Whatever view we have of “others” may actually be a reflection of who we ourselves truly are.
The next time you hear that voice in your head, stop listening!
POINT 2: SATAN DECEIVES (Revelation 12:9)
Don’t be confused. Lying and deceiving are NOT the same. In fact, you can deceive without lying.
To deceive is to mislead, entice or give a false impression.
Satan owns the right-of-way on the Broad Way.
It’s easy ..... so it’s got to be good.
It’s beautiful ..... so it couldn’t be so bad.
It’s fun ..... so what can it hurt.
It’s temporary ..... so it’s just this once.
It’s my right ..... so I deserve this.
It’s popular ..... everyone else does it.
It’s innocent ..... so nothing will come of it.
The wisest, the richest, the smartest, the kindest, the purest, the noblest – all of us have fallen prey to Satan’s deception.
People want to believe that the deception of Satan is true - so much that they shut down their knowledge of right and wrong. All Satan really has to do is tell us that we are right and justified. And that’s not difficult for him.
It’s the “As Seen On TV” syndrome. It sounds too good to be true. We read the dreadful reviews and yet we think that the magical “as seen on tv” product will really work for us.
Why do we fall for the deceipt?
WANT dominates WISDOM.
CRAVING overrides CONSCIENCE.
The next time you hear that voice in your head, stop listening.
POINT 3: SATAN DESTROYS
Satan destroys friendships, families, marriages ...
... confidence, joy, peace, and sometimes even health.
His purpose is “to steal, kill and destroy.” (John 10:10)
The Bible describes him as “a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)
In the face of great tragedies, instead of blaming the Destroyer, many blame God. But Earth is not God’s dominion!
God gave dominion over Earth to Man.
(Genesis 1:26) And God said (to the Son and Holy Trinity in Heaven), Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion ... over all the earth...”
And when Eve and Adam LISTENED and obeyed the voice of Satan,
came under the authority of Satan, and Man turned his right of dominion over to Satan.
(Luke 4:6-7 NIV) “And he (Satan) said to him (Jesus), “I (Satan) will give you (Jesus) all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you (Jesus) worship me (Satan), it will all be yours.”
God is the RE-STORER not the DE-STROYER.
If you are a Child of God, every word you hear from His Voice will be CON-structive. Every word you hear from Satan’s voice will eventually be DE-structive.
God renovates. Satan demolates.
Jesus saves. Satan discards.
Whether it is the voices you hear in your head or on the phone, Facebook or at home, school or work,
if it LIES,
if it DECEIVES,
if it DESTROYS,
it ain’t GOD!
The next time you hear voices in your head, ask yourself, “Whose voice am I listening to?”
And, my friend, that’ll preach.
LET’S BE HONEST: (Applying Truth to Real Life)
1. First let’s look inside of ourselves.
List any LIES that you tell yourself or those around you.
2. List any ways that you are DECEIVING yourself or those around you.
3. List any ways that you may be DESTRUCTIVE to yourself or those around you.
4. Next, let’s look at others.
List relationships you have in which there is dishonesty and/or deception.
5. List relationships you have which are destructive.
6. What voices are you primarily listening to?
7. Beside each voice, note whether or not it is a godly voice.
